like to sell ads in the Skate Midland program.
We are getting the printing at very low cost and
we sell the programs for $1 each, so this will

JULY 2006 |
MFSC’s
Synchronized Skating Program is looking for interested skaters of
all ages!
(Yes, male skaters
are welcome!)
Currently we have an adult
masters, teen, and pre-juvenile teams but we can form
others if there is enough interest!
Synch skaters need to have:
- A positive attitude
- A willingness to learn
- Openness to different types of people and learning styles
- A sense of humor
- Flexibility
- Willingness to be a part of a Team
- An appreciation of chocolate is optional!
Team placements will
depend upon a combination of age and skating skills. (In general,
even beginning team candidates must be able to skate forwards and
backwards cross-overs, and do turns from
forward to backward with good flow.)
Season kick-off meetings (with chocolate) are scheduled for Tuesday
and Wednesday August 15 and 16 – depending upon team/level.
Practices for all teams are
currently scheduled for Sunday and Wednesday evenings, starting just
after Labor Day. The full synch season runs through February, with
just a few practices on Sundays in March. The teams generally
compete in 2-3 competitions and perform in 2-3 exhibitions or shows
each season.
If you are interested in joining any of our synchronized skating
teams this fall or have questions about the synchronized skating
program,
please
contact
Hedi Allis.
If
you’re not quite ready to join a team, but are interested in
synch skating perhaps in the future, yell, and I’ll place you on
our “e-mail”ing list!)

Midland Skaters Travel for
Training and Testing
In mid-July, Jordan and Chelsea Evans traveled to Minocqua, WI to
participate in the Lakeland Figure Skating Club summer training
program. During the week they trained 5 hours per day with
coaches, Jessica Gullan, Marcie Galetti and dance coach and
partner, Andrew Beck. At the end of the week a USFS test session
was held and Chelsea passed the pre-gold Killian dance and
Jordan passed the Novice Freestyle test and the Rhumba
International dance.
Both Jordan and Chelsea train with coaches Kathy Collings and
Jessica Gullan in Midland. Congratulations to our MFSC

MFSC Members Earn Money for Club
- Future Volunteer Opportunities!!
Thanks to Bryan Warner, Katie Bartlett, Stephanie Deprest, Anna Cieslinski, Sue and Dave Bakke, Lisa Asiala and Sue Paessena, the Midland Figure Skating Club is $282.93 richer!
The money came from what we earned (10% after tax) while running the concession stand at the Dow Event Center last Saturday night. I might add that part of the earnings, $11.50, came from tips -- 90% of which were given to Katie and Stephanie--go figure!
This money will be used to defer equipment costs, help support shows and exhibitions and, in general, help maintain the cost of ice.
We need 8 volunteers (18 years or older) for each of the following dates, so please send me an email as soon as you can to schedule your volunteer effort!!! Most of the dates are Hockey--so beverage sales will be good. Beverage sales=greater income!
We purposely scheduled events ahead of time so you have plenty of planning
flexibility:
- Friday, September 15 (Hockey, 2 games)
- Thursday, November 16 (Hockey)
- Thursday, November 30 (Hockey)
- Thursday, January 18 (Shrine Circus)
- Friday, February 16 (Hockey)
- Tuesday, March 6 ( MHSAA Hockey
I really appreciate the help we received on our first and longest outing to an event in Saginaw!!!

Tri-States Competition
The Tri-States competition which will be held on April 21st and 22nd is fast approaching. As a fund raising effort, we would like to sell advertising space in the program for this event. Prices will range from $10 - $100 for ads.
Please link to the letter to potential advertisers that can be used when approaching any local business or organization who you know that may be willing to contribute. If everyone could contact at least 2 local businesses, we should be able to make a bit of profit on the programs. If you know someone at a local business, then that would be a good place to start. A face to face contact generally works better than a letter in the mail.
The program will be 8-1/2" x 11" in format and all of the ads will be in black and white. The attached letter will give you more details on pricing as well as the Tri-States competition itself. All ad copy should be in my hands by
April 10th and checks should be made out to MFSC. You can send them to me at:
Sue Jacob
1206 North Parkway
Midland, MI 48640
or drop them off when you see me at the rink (seems like a second home!).
Any questions - contact Sue Jacob.
MFSC High School Team is

By Doug Vanderlaan
The Grand Rapids Press
Even if they were younger
and single, Tanner Allis and Bryan Warner say they
wouldn't be having as much fun as they are now as the only
men on an all-female figure skating team.
"The locker room situations can be fun,"
chuckles Allis, 53, after Friday's Master's Division
performance during the National Synchronized Team Skating
Championships at Van Andel Arena in front of a crowd of
8,416, "because at many of these events the men don't
get separate facilities."

MFSC
Hosts USFS Skating Month Celebration, January 29, 2006
Thanks to all of those
coaches, skaters, parents, sons of coaches and others
who helped with the USFS Skating Month celebration.
While we didn't have hundreds of new skaters, everyone
who attended enjoyed themselves ... (from what we
overheard)
One little girl told me she learned to skate, spin and
stop--hopefully it was in that order. But she was sure
excited!
So, thanks to everyone who helped--I think there was
consensus that we should try to do this more than once a
year. What great news for MFSC!

MFSC Skaters Earn Gold

|
Figure
skating -the beauty and grace looks easy and effortless, behind
that is years of hard work. Three skaters from the Midland
Figure Skating Club have earned their Gold Medals in various
disciplines of the United States Figure Skating test structure. USFS developed a set of criteria for judging and evaluating the
skills required to become an accomplished figure skater.
Completing all tests up to the gold level is an extremely
difficult task and requires years of dedicated work, and a great
deal of skill. Only a small percentage of skaters can claim this
great prize, and very few among the general public can claim any
other accomplishment of comparable effort. |
On
November 13, 2005, Maryellen Tighe conquered the top of figure
skating's free skate test structure by passing the Senior
Freeskating Test and the 15 tests that must precede it. Only a
small percentage of skaters can claim this great prize.
Recently both Ashley Partlo & Jordan Evans completed a total of
23 tests that include ballroom style ice dances like waltzes,
tangos, fox-trots, quicksteps, blues, and cha, cha. Ice dancing
involves a partner, footwork, timing, set patterns, set
movements, set music, judges with set criteria for technical and
artistic elements. It takes years of training and coaching to
work through this test structure. Each of the dance elements
become progressively more difficult; the judge's expectations
get higher and near perfection needs to be accomplished for a
gold medal performance.
Jordan Evans also passed her Senior Moves-In-The-Field figure
skating test. This is the highest level test in this discipline
of skating and is closely connected to freestyle. This
discipline involves highly complicated footwork done at high
speed. Again, the judging expectations at the senior level are
near perfection.
Maryellen and Ashley are both students at H.H. Dow High School.
Ashley is a Senior planning to attend Grand Valley State
University next fall and is the daughter of Kurt & Cheryl Partlo.
Maryellen is a Junior and the daughter of Dean and Cathy Tighe.
Jordan Evans is a Junior at Midland High School and is the
daughter of Jon and Becky Evans. Congratulations to all three of
these skaters! |
