JULY 2007 |
2007 Synch Season Start-Up Clinics
For all skaters interested in Synchronized Team Skating our season kick-off sessions will be held August 21 and 22 (next week!)
- For youth skaters – kick-off will be Tuesday evening, August 21, from 5pm – 6:30 pm. We are
hoping to form both pre-juv and teen teams.
- For adult skaters – there will be two sessions: Tuesday evening, August 21 from 6:30-8pm; and Wednesday evening, August 22, from 7-8:30 pm. We are hoping to form both a non-travel adult team (open adult level) and a masters team.
Teams will be formed based on the numbers, ages, and skating levels of skaters attending. If you are interested in skating on one of these teams, but can not attend kick-off, please let me know.
All kick-off sessions will be held at the Midland Civic Arena, on ice. Cindy Baran will be here to refresh skills and introduce choreography to skaters. By the way, there is no separate fee to attend these sessions.
If you have any questions, or need your arm twisted to come out for team – please let me know!
We look forward to seeing you all – soon!

SPIKES TO SKATES - KRAMER
COMBINES BASEBALL WITH FIGURE SKATING

Baseball and figure skating don't usually go
together. But don't tell that to Jake Kramer.
Kramer will compete at U.S. Figure Skating's National Showcase: A
Competition in Theatrical Skating, in August in Fort Collins, Colo.,
with a routine that's all about America's pastime.
The routine is set to John Fogerty's song "Centerfield," and Kramer has
dedicated the routine to his former Little League coach, Ed Wilson.
"Baseball's one of my favorite sports, and the best years I had playing
baseball were in Little League and he was my favorite coach, so I
thought, why not do a routine dedicated to him?" said Kramer, a
13-year-old eighth-grader at Northeast Middle School.
Wilson, who coached Kramer and his older brother, Charlie, for three
years each, was invited to watch the routine the first time that Kramer
performed it.
"Jake's a great kid and a good athlete and good baseball player," Wilson
said. "For him to incorporate his baseball experience into the ice
skating routine, I thought was just terrific. ... I was quite surprised
when I heard about it, and I enjoyed watching him skate it very much."
Wearing his Northeast Little League jersey during the routine, Kramer
lays out the four bases on the ice, pleads with an imaginary coach to
"Put me in, coach" (as the song says), and jumps up against the glass as
if catching a ball at the centerfield wall.
"At the end, I hit a home run and run around the bases and slide into
home," said Kramer, who has skated competitively for about five years
and is at the Preliminary level.
Kramer placed first at a competition in Midland, second in Royal Oak,
and tied for first in Traverse City to qualify for nationals. His
competition so far has been all girls, which his mother, Julie, said is
common at this level.
"The boys are jumpers, and the girls are more flexible," Julie noted.
"I can compete against the girls and I know I can do well against them,"
Kramer said. "So being a boy, I don't really feel that I'm limited."
But he has been surprised by his success with the routine.
"I really didn't think I would go this far," he said. "I thought I would
win quite a few competitions with it, but I never thought I would be
able to go to nationals with it."
Kramer is looking forward to seeing how he does at the nationals Aug.
8-12 near Denver, where he will be representing the Midland Figure
Skating Club.
"I want to go as far as I can and I want to see how my program fares
against all the other people that come from everywhere around America,"
he said.
Kramer keeps himself busy. He is a catcher on the Garber baseball team
in the Junior League, he plays hockey in the fall and winter, and he
figure skates year around.
"We kind of trade off," he said of balancing baseball and figure skating
during the summer. "Neither sport is more important than the other. If I
skip baseball for figure skating one time, I'll probably skip figure
skating the next time."

NEW BOARD AND OFFICERS
The MFSC Membership elected five new Board Directors at the Annual Meeting and Banquet held April 27, 2007. The new Directors are Duane Boswell, Jane Chamberlain, Paul Morabito, Ray Passeno and Donna Ronan. Directors
fulfilling their second year are Judy Hutchison, Nancy Klier and Cindy Winland. The new Board was seated on May 7, 2007, within the 10 days stipulated in the
Club By-laws.
CHANGE IN SPRING ICE
Due to the low enrollment numbers the Friday 4:30-5:30pm Club session has been cancelled. It is now offered as a City Ice session. Please note that if you skate at this time you must pay the city ice fee in the pro-shop and you can no longer use this session as a Club make-up.
INTERESTED IN SYNCHRO?
Calling potential Synchro Skaters – all ages!
We are currently forming our plans for teams and ice usage for the fall Synchro season.
If you are interested in participating, please send an email to Hedi
Allis with the skater’s name, age (if under 25), and skating level?
Current plans are to form pre-juvenile and masters teams. However, we could also form beginning youth and adult teams and a teen team as well – assuming there are skaters who want to participate. This expression of interest will not commit you or your skater; this is only for planning purposes. Teams will form later on in the summer once we have practices times and fees guesstimated.

MFSC ALUMNI NEWS
Nicki
Hayes
I hope this holiday season is finding you
happy and healthy! Well...after A LOT of hard work and
dedication...something that my skating career definitely prepared
me for...I can now sign my name ... Nicole M. Hayes MS,
RD, LD ... meaning I have my Master's degree (in
nutrition), and am a registered dietitian through the American
Dietetics Association, and a licensed dietitian to work in the
state of Ohio! (view
pictures of the celebration)
Since the beginning of November I've been
working 28 hours a week at Medina General Hospital as a clinical
dietitian. Since it is a small community based hospital
(suburb of Cleveland) I do everything and anything from
writing tube feed recommendations, to counseling 550# patients, to
checking menus for people on specialized ( e.g. diabetic) diets.
It's a good job in that I get to pull my experiences from the
internship and get good clinical experience.
As for other plans...I'm looking into a part
time research assistant position on campus, starting my sports
nutrition seminar business, and/or finding a full time position at
one of the larger hospitals in downtown Cleveland. I am also
a member of the dietetics practice group that specializes in
cardiovascular, sports, and wellness nutrition...and I hope to
present my research on gymnasts and body composition at the
national convention this spring...and maybe even win a monetary
prize! =)
Thank you MFSC for being a very special part
of my life and most importantly for all your support along the
way!
H
Happy Skating and holidays!
Sincerely,
Nicki
Hayes
