MFSC Skaters to compete
at Eastern and Upper Great Lakes Regionals

Five skaters from the Midland Figure Skating
Club will compete in United States Figure
Skating Regional competition during the month of
October. The Regional Championships are the
first step in qualifying for National
competition. Midland skaters competing in the
qualifying divisions at Regionals will have the
opportunity to vie for berths on the Junior
National team. These skaters include Mollie
Boswell of Freeland and Lauren Shuff of West
Branch, who will travel to Carmel, Indiana for
the Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championships
October 16th-20th. Boswell, 12, will compete in
the Juvenile girls division. This will be her
second appearance at a Regional event; she was
previously 5th in the Pre-Juvenile girls
division in 2007. Shuff, 16, will compete in
the Intermediate ladies division. This will be
her fourth appearance at the EGL Regional
Championships. In 2006, she placed fourth in
the Open Juvenile division.
Competing in the non-qualifying divisions at the
EGL Regional Championships are Sophia Horny, 12,
of Midland and Sarah Miller, 11, of Freeland.
Both skaters will be making their first
appearance in regional competition and will be
skating in the Preliminary girls division. .
Another Midland skater, Catie Kramer, will be
competing at the Upper Great Lakes Regional
Championships in Hoffman Estates, Illinois on
October 23rd-27th. Kramer, 15, will also be
appearing in her first Regional competition.
In
early 2009, the Midland Figure Skating Club
established a partnership with the Detroit
Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, MI. DSC is
home to current National Champions Alissa Czisny
and Jeremy Abbott. Midland's Regional team has
leveraged this relationship in preparing for the
event, splitting their training time between the
Midland Civic Arena and DSC.

Midland area adult
skaters compete at Adult Nationals The 2009 US Adult Figure
Skating Championships were held in Grand Rapids April
21-25. There were over 400 competitors and 50 officials from across the
country at
the competition. Competitors in this competition are divided into five
age
categories (21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60 and 61+) and two tracks (masters
and
adult). Events are held in singles, pairs, ice dancing and interpretive.
Of those
400 competitors, 7 skaters were from the Midland area.
Winning GOLD in their events were Melanie Black and
Breaha Montague-Bauer.
Melanie is a third-time Gold medalist in Ladies Artistic/Dramatic
Interpretive.
Breaha won Gold in Bronze Ladies Freeskate. Melanie also won Silver
medals in
Ladies Silver Freeskate and in Ladies Light Entertainment/Comedy
Interpretive.
Jan Karr placed 3rd in both Bronze Ladies Freeskate and Light
Entertainment/Comedy
Interpretive. Kris Hallet and Tanner Allis competed in Centennial Dance
and won a
fourth place medal. Karl Jacob competed in Bronze Men’s Freestyle and
placed 6th.
Pam Hall placed 7th in Bronze Ladies Freeskate.

Coaches from Detroit
Skating Club to teach at Midland Figure Skating Club

The Midland Figure Skating Club (MFSC) is proud to announce that it
has entered into an agreement with
five Junior National, National and Olympic-level coaches from the
Detroit Skating Club (DSC). These
coaches will travel to Midland and work with our current team of
MFSC professional coaches. This
agreement will become effective February 15th. This will address the
ongoing growth in the number of
skaters attending our Basic Skills program, and enhance and expand
the current training opportunities
offered at the Midland Figure Skating Club.
MFSC offers training in the disciplines of figure skating including
Basic Skills, freestyle, ice dancing,
moves, synchronized skating, and off-ice strength and conditioning.
MFSC has been working on expanding
its offering to the many talented skaters of the Tri-City area,
including additional full time coaching, and
other programs. They operate inside the Midland Civic Arena.
Representing the coaching staff from DSC are Richard Brown, Seth
Chafetz, Jason Dungjen, Steve Hartsell,
and Natasha Haase. These coaches will coordinate with MFSC's current
coaching staff of Hedi Allis, Teri
Haag, Kris Hallett, Melanie Black, Stephanie Deprest, Sheral Voelker,
Sherra Voelker, Brandon Forsyth,
and Sergey Magerovskiy.
Detroit Skating Club is the home club of the 2009 U.S. National
Ladies Champion Alyssa Czisny and 2009
US National Dance Champion Charlie White with partner Meryl Davis
(Canton). MFSC hosted the 2009
Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championship Competition held in
October 2008
Midland Figure Skating Club offers beginning skating lessons through
USFS Basic Skills sessions. The
